Think Like An Artist asks some of Canada’s best-known visual artists, musicians, filmmakers, actors, authors, poets, playwrights and other creatives: What is a simple trick you use when you encounter an obstacle in your work?

Inspired by the concept of Oblique Strategies, Think Like An Artist is a virtual deck of cards featuring the wisdom of 67 Canadian artists from across disciplines. Each card includes an original quote meant to inspire creative problem solving from a notable Canadian artist, such as filmmaker Sarah Polley, visual artist Ken Lum and the musician Shad, complemented by a whimsical illustration by Nolan Pelletier.

CBX: Canadian Ballroom Extravaganza is a new kind of ballroom competition. In this series, 10 stars of the ballroom scene pair up with 10 queer and trans filmmakers to battle each other in five categories: Vogue, Bizarre, Sex Siren, Face and Runway. Instead of “walking the ball,” the teams compete by creating stunning short videos that honour the category conventions while serving something fresh and fab.

Anne-imations

One of the striking qualities of Anne from Anne with an E is her vivid imagination and her sense of escapism. CBC Digital commissioned animators/illustrators to depict a select scene from season one with their own unique style, bringing users into the world of Anne’s imagination.

We commissioned Christie Lee of Musqueam to write and record a poem that explained what is a Trickster. Christie Lee was named Vancouver’s poet laureate back in 2018, and was tasked by the city to champion poetry, language and arts, and elevate the prominence of Host Nation and urban Indigenous poetry and cultural practices, according to the city of Vancouver’s official website.

Taking inspiration from the Haisla Trickster, the same that is depicted in the CBC original series Trickster, Christie’s rendition of the shapeshifting raven teaches us lessons to pass on from generation to generation.

Workin’ Moms Ask

We invited 20 strangers (ages: 19-40, men and women, diverse backgrounds) to answer a series of questions about potentially uncomfortable, on-brand topics around themes or social issues touched on in Workin’ Moms season three.

CBC Arts Presents: The 50 Greatest Films Directed By Canadians

We asked Canada’s top film critics, programmers and industry leaders to list their favourite films directed by Canadians. Responses poured in from across the country for more than 200 films. The CBC Arts team then tallied the ballots and compiled the results to form a top 50 that mixes Hollywood blockbusters with indie darlings to create the first ranking of Canadian-directed films.

Each of the top ten films are presented with an original essay from notable Canadian writers exploring its impact.
